Creative Wellbeing through Yarn Craft at the Wellcome Collection, London – May – July 2018
My drop in sessions have been inspired by the Reading Room themes of Breath and Mind, and especially Freud’s notion of relieving female hysteria through needlework. He believed that lively imaginations would be numbed by the monotony of repetitive sewing, but I believe that through the gentle rhythm of yarn crafts we can, in fact, liberate our minds, calm our souls and free our creative spirits. I love the idea of turning his thoughts around.
Each three hour session (you stay as long as you like), will explore different aspects of yarn craft including crochet, knitting, weaving and embroidery. During the sessions I will chat about the craft, give demonstrations and tutorials and tell stories about yarn. I have been inspired by Paula Vester’s fairytale collection At the Humming Wheel, which I have permission to use. People can spectate or take part, learn how to develop a skill or simply bring along their own work, sit and enjoy the company of others. Throughout the sessions there will be opportunities for conversation and I will bring in concepts of creative meditation for those interested.
